COURSE DESCRIPTION
Swim/Paddle: DUE TO DEMAND AND SHIPPING PLEASE PLAN TO BRING YOUR OWN SWIM CAP IF YOU PLAN TO WEAR ONE. THANK YOU WE APPRECIATE THE HELP!! To get you out there and to challenge yourself at the Alexandria Triathlon, participants will be able to choose between a 500 yard swim or a 0.8 mile paddle. For safety the swim and paddle courses will be separate, our goal is that the first swimmer and the first paddler will be exiting the water at approximately the same time. Swimmers are welcome to wear a wetsuit if desired, keeping in mind that the water temperatures will likely be in the 70s. Those that choose to paddle are required to be solo in/on their watercraft. Kayaks, paddleboards and canoes are acceptable. Blow-up vinyl “floaties” are not allowed. Watercraft needing to be rowed are not allowed. Pedal powered watercraft are not allowed. Participants are required to be wearing a US Coast Guard approved life vest, and it must be worn from the start until your watercraft has been pulled up on the beach. Paddleboard tethers are not required but highly recommended. Participants must carry/drag their watercraft and paddles solo from the beach up to a designated area near transition where volunteers will accept and safely store them, and then proceed into the transition area. Bike: Bike Course map: https://www.strava.com/segments/27749511 Certified cycling helmets are required to be worn and secured with the strap fastened anytime while mounted on your bike. Participants will only mount their bike after exiting transition at the Mount line. Participants will dismount their bikes at the Dismount line before entering transition. No riding is allowed in transition. Bicycles must be functioning properly with working front and rear brakes. Note that the bike course will be open to the public, and participants must be aware of and follow the rules of the road. As always ride courteously and defensively being aware of drivers and pedestrians. The 12.1 mile bike course will provide a scenic view of the beauty of the Alexandria area. Upon exiting Brophy Park riders will go south about ¼ mile and turn right (NW) onto County Highway 82. After riding about 2.5 miles turn right in Garfield onto S State Rd, and proceed to the four-way stop in downtown Garfield. As directed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse turn right (E) onto County Highway 22, and ride about 5 miles towards Alexandria. Turn right (SW) onto W Lake Cowdry Rd. Proceed about ¾ mile and turn right (NW) onto Lake Taylor Rd NW. Turn left (S) after about ½ mile onto E Lake Brophy Rd NW, and then proceed a short distance and turn right (NW) onto County Highway 82. Push it hard about a mile before turning right back onto County Highway 114, and then finally turn right into the park and the transition area. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse and Volunteers will be at the corners to direct you. Drafting while on the bike is not allowed, and the USAT rules are expected to be followed. That means no following closer than about 3 bike lengths, or about 17 feet. Once you have entered the draft of another participant you must make the pass within 15 seconds. A pass is completed when your front wheel is past your competitor’s front wheel. Bicycles must be functioning safely and properly. Jake’s Bike will be providing bike support for the event, and can help with pumping tires and minor adjustments. Run: The 3.1 mile run/hike/walk has been set up to provide you some of the best views in the Alexandria area, overlooking Lakes North Union and Brophy. It will start on the paved roads surrounding the park, continue on the mowed hiking paths within the park, and finish on the Central Lakes Trail with the Finish line at the transition area. 1/3 of the distance is paved, and the other 1/3 is on mowed hiking paths. The run/hike/walk will exit transition at the same point as the bike, then proceed out on the Central Lakes trail to the northwest. Participants will continue and turn right (E) onto Centennial Dr NW. After 3/4 mile turn right near the north parking area and enjoy 1 mile on the mowed hiking paths. The finishing stretch will be heading west on the Central Lakes Trail to the finish line. Transition Information: Transition will open at 6:30 AM race day, and will close at 7:45 for all participants to attend the mandatory pre-race meeting. Access to transition and the watercraft areas will be limited to participants, and will be patrolled by local bike club members. Numbers will be checked. The transition area will occupy the eastern half of the beach area parking lot. If you are a paddler there will be a designated drop-off area for watercraft will be provided on the west side of the beach lot. Due to limited time/space please do not drop your bike or gear while at the watercraft drop area. Park your vehicle after dropping your watercraft and then bring your bike/gear bike to transition. Watercraft pick up will not be available until the last participant has cleared transition for their run/hike/walk leg. |
